Martins scores first goal of the season

Obafemi Martins scored his first goal of the season for Rubin Kazan to ensure a 1:0 win over Anzhi Makhachkala in a Russian Premier League Championship Play-offs game on Sunday. The Nigeria international netted in the 50th minute after crouching to loop a header over the Anzhi backline following a nicely flighted cross from near the corner flag. Martins has endured an injury- ravaged season and today's game was only his sixth of the season. The defeat seriously dents Anzhi's hopes of a UEFA Champions League place as they slid to sixth place on the eight-team table and could drop further pending the result of today's game between Lokomotiv Moscow and Dinamo Moscow. Legendary African striker Samuel Eto'o led Anzhi's frontline, while Morocco midfielders Mbark Boussoufa and Mehdi Carcela as well as Congo defender Chris Samba all started for the Dagestan- side. Meanwhile Nigeria striker Ahmed Musa came on for Liberia star Sekou Oliseh in the 69th minute as CSKA Moscow drew 1:1 away to Kuban Kransnodar yesterday. Cote d'Ivoire hitman Seydou Doumbia bagged the goal for CSKA. The draw could cost the Muscovites their second place in the standings, and final UEFA Champions League place, by the end of the weeken
